Academy Awards 2013 Reflection

By reflecting on the 2013 Academy Awards, I got a feel for what people really look for in a movie. While I love to laugh at the one-liners and squeal at the romantic first kisses, I’ve come to accept that the general expectation of films is much more refined than my own. This may reflect on the fact that it doesn’t typically take much to entertain me, but it still doesn’t change the fact that my standards for films should be higher. While looking at all the films nominated for Best Picture, I realized that all of the movies had some very depressing tones. Realizing this shocked me, and I started to think about why these movies were nominated. I think I’ve figured it out. They all have amazing, thought and emotion provoking messages and they conveyed them exceptionally well through the screens. So, by reflecting on the Oscars, I have set a new precedent for myself. I will no longer go to see a movie just because it looks funny or the lead actress is like, super pretty. I will go to see a film that will affect me in such a way that when I leave, I will keep thinking about that movie for the next few days, perhaps even a week. I did see two of the films that were nominated for best picture, and they both left me thinking for quite some time. So from now on, that will be my goal. Wish me luck!
