Clues to a Great Story

The film “Wreck it Ralph” tells a beautiful story that rings true with all audiences. Its starts off with a promise that Ralph is going to change the way that others think about him. wreckitralph.jpegFrom the beginning we can see that he is faced with prejudices against him by those whose respect he wishes for. He wants to be viewed as a hero, not a villain, and this statement at the commencement of the film is a promise that will be fulfilled by the ending. Later in the film, there is a new character named Vanellope who is shunned by the others in her game. This gives the audience a chance to infer a bit and put two and two together. You can see that she and Ralph share the same desire to be viewed differently, and so one can guess that Smudge has a complication of her own that keeps her from being “normal”. This makes the audience more invested in her story and what caused her to be an outcast. Both of these characters are so lovable because they have a spine within them, the desire to change what others think about them. Ralph wants to be celebrated instead of tossed into a pile of bricks each day. He wants people to cheer for him rather than to defeat him. This drives him throughout the plot as he embarks on a journey to win his own medal to earn respect. Vanellope was cast out and wants nothing more than to be accepted into the racing ranks again to prove that she has what it takes. This motivates her to reach out and take drastic measures to accomplish her goals. At the same time, there is another plot element that occurs. There is the threat of invasion or cancellation of a game, which would be the ultimate despair for a video game character. This adds to a sense of uncertainty, and puts some pressure on the timing and unfolding of the rest of the plot. One will anticipate how things will turn out and if the characters will accomplish their original goals that they set out for. The film also had an over arching theme; proving others wrong. All of the characters had some attributes that no one else seemed to notice in them, and they played out as the film progressed. The bad guy wasn’t so bad, the glitch could still be a winner, the heroine could have baggage, and the good guy didn’t always get what he wanted. Time and time again, the characters would prove others wrong by showing their true personalities and wishes. This movie also did a spectacular job of infusing wonder. The entire concept of a video game world was fascinating to see, especially the candy land scenery. Being a sixteen-year-old did not change the fact that I was taken away with the amazing feature of such an imaginary world. Overall, the story was truly amazing and did a beautiful job of connecting to and relating with the audience.
