Oblivion was co-written and directed by Joseph Kosinski and was released in April of 2013. The main stars of the film include Tom Cruise, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, and Olga Kurylenko. This science fiction film is set to take place in 2077, in the aftermath of a devastating war between humans and invading aliens.
Jack Harper plays a small role in his even smaller society, fixing up drones that assist in the consummation of our earth’s resources. Sixty years prior, a war had left the planet devastated, and all humans had left Earth for Triton, a colony on one of Jupiter’s moons. Jack and his partner Victoria are set to leave for the Tet, a space station where they await relocation to Triton, in two weeks time. Victoria is thrilled to leave, but Jack has an attachment to his home planet. He often has dreams of the times before his memory was swiped, and one woman seems to frequently appear in them. It all seems for naught however as day after day, Jack goes out to repair drones and avoid alien Scavs that roam the demolished planet. Victoria stays in their control tower, receiving orders from their commander named Sally on the Tet.
One day, a signal comes from what used to be the empire state building. Set up by the Scavs, who appear to be attempting to capture Jack, the signal is summoning something from space to the earth. While Jack is enjoying his hideout on the lake later on, an object comes crashing down to the surface. The object appears to be a space craft that had been holding a few humans in hibernation. As drones begin to kill the humans that were kept in hibernation pods, he manages to save only one; the woman from his dreams. This shocking discovery will shake his understanding of reality, especially when he realizes that they aren’t the last humans left on earth after all. Like dominoes, one revelation leads to another and Jack learns that he can no longer trust the only things he ever knew to be true.
Oblivion was a fantastic film that kept the audience in constant questioning until the very end. The acting, specifically of Tom Cruise, especially contributed to this. Others have described this as him at his best, and I would have to concur. Cruise did a phenomenal job in the role of Jack Harper only as an actor with his charisma could. Being no stranger to the science fiction genre, this was easily one of the best performances of his career.
The cinematography and special effects of Oblivion also contributed to the greatness of the film. As a science fiction film, the bar is always set high when it comes to special effects. Oblivion was hardly short of flying chases, complex battles, and trips to space that brilliantly utilized special effects. It will definitely satisfy those who love the science fiction genre. In addition, despite the barrenness of the landscape, the picture was absolutely beautiful. Each scene was stunning to see and fascinating to observe.
All in all, oblivion is a film that I would love to see again, especially after seeing the surprise ending! If you are a science fiction fan or a Tom Cruise fan, I would definitely recommend this film to you because I doubt you will be disappointed in either category.
